Toyota Hilux Mild-Hybrid Diesel Debuts in the UK

Toyota Hilux Mild-Hybrid Diesel Debuts in the UK

(Posted on 26/03/25)

Toyota has unveiled a new mild-hybrid diesel Hilux in the UK, bringing enhanced efficiency and refinement to its legendary pickup. While keeping its rugged capability, this updated model offers a smarter powertrain for those who want added performance without sacrificing durability.

Toyota has stated that the mild-hybrid diesel Toyota Hilux offers the same capabilities as the regular model, but with added refinement and improvements.

It still runs on the same 2.8-litre turbo diesel four-cylinder engine, but now with an electric motor generator and a 48V lithium-ion battery, which helps reduce the stress on the engine. A compact 4.3Ah battery is cleverly integrated beneath the rear seats, adding to the vehicle’s efficiency without taking up valuable space. This setup provides a smoother, more refined driving experience while maintaining the Hilux's legendary toughness.

The Hilux remains as capable as ever, effortlessly wading through up to 700mm of water. It also features a new Multi-Terrain Select system, allowing drivers to choose from six different off-road modes, including settings for rock crawling, deep snow, and muddy terrain.

The electric motor works alongside the engine to provide smoother and more responsive power delivery, while the hybrid system enables longer start-stop cycles to reduce unnecessary idling.

It produces 204PS and 500Nm of torque, with CO? emissions of 265g/km. Power output is rated at 201bhp and 369lb-ft, sent to all four wheels via a six-speed automatic gearbox.

Despite its size, the Hilux accelerates from 0-62mph in 10.7 seconds, which is respectable for a pickup of this class. Importantly, its 1,000kg payload and 3,500kg towing capacity remain unchanged, ensuring it retains its practicality and capability.

The new engine is exclusively available on the range-topping Hilux Invincible X Double Cab, priced at £41,431. Like all new double-cab pickups with a payload over 1,000kg, it will be classified as a company car for benefit-in-kind (BIK) tax purposes starting from 6 April 2025.

With CO? emissions of 265g/km, it falls into the highest BIK bracket of 37%. For those in the 40% income tax bracket, this translates to an annual BIK cost of £7,289—almost double the previous flat rate of £3,960. Despite the hybrid element, Toyota is not emphasising fuel economy benefits with the new powertrain, and with official CO? emissions of 265g/km, it remains one of the highest-emitting options in the Hilux range.

When it comes to BIK rates, the Hilux isn’t the most attractive option—especially compared to the upcoming Ford Ranger PHEV. Announced in 2024 and set to hit the roads in 2025, the Ford Ranger PHEV will be Europe’s first plug-in hybrid pickup and will benefit from a significantly lower 19% BIK tax rate starting in April 2025.

The updated Toyota Hilux brings impressive enhancements to its already formidable reputation, blending rugged off-road capability with refined hybrid technology. While the new mild-hybrid diesel powertrain offers smoother, more responsive performance and greater efficiency, it’s clear that Toyota’s focus is on maintaining the Hilux's legendary toughness rather than offering drastic fuel savings. With an impressive array of off-road features and its ever-reliable towing and payload capacity, the Hilux continues to stand out as a workhorse for those who need both practicality and performance.
