Jaecoo 7 Takes to UK Roads: All You Need to Know
(Posted on 18/12/24)
The Jaecoo 7 SUV, a new addition to the market, offers both petrol and plug-in hybrid options. This family-friendly vehicle is now available to order and is designed to deliver a great balance of style, performance, and practicality.
You may not have heard of Jaecoo before, but it’s a newly established brand launched by the Chinese company Chery in 2023. The brand aims to make its mark in the European and UK markets, starting with the Jaecoo 7. The name "Jaecoo" is inspired by a fusion of the German word “Jäger” and the English word “cool.”
This SUV offers a premium interior and a gently sloping roofline, giving it a design reminiscent of the Range Rover Evoque. One surprising aspect is its competitive starting price, as low as £29,435, making it a strong contender against models like the Nissan Qashqai and Audi Q3.
The Jaecoo 7 is available as a plug-in hybrid or petrol variant, with a choice between two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive models.
The two-wheel drive model features a 1.6-liter turbo petrol engine delivering 145bhp and a fuel economy of 37.7mpg. The four-wheel drive version, priced around £23,850, offers advanced capabilities and various driving modes tailored for off-road conditions such as mud, snow, sand, and general off-road terrain.
It is said to have significant off-roading capabilities, including a wading depth of up to 600mm and a Bosch-developed power brake system equipped with a smart differential lock.
The Jaecoo 7 seems like a practical choice for those seeking an affordable vehicle with solid all-weather and off-road capabilities.
The Jaecoo 7 PHEV model features a 1.5-liter turbo petrol engine paired with an 18.3kWh battery, delivering a total output of 201bhp. It offers an all-electric range of 56 miles, with an official combined range of 745 miles. The PHEV boasts an impressive combined fuel economy figure of 403mpg, and it can achieve 47mpg once the battery is depleted. The Jaecoo 7 achieves 0-62mph in 8 seconds.
In terms of equipment, the Jaecoo 7 is impressively well-equipped as standard. It features a 14.8-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 10.25-inch driver display, and a head-up display. Additional highlights include wireless phone charging, an eight-speaker Sony audio system, and an optional panoramic roof.
Adding to its family car appeal, the Jaecoo 7 has achieved a 5-star Euro NCAP crash test rating. It is equipped with numerous advanced driver assistance technologies, including a camera system that provides a 540-degree view, as described by Jaecoo.
Inside, the cabin boasts a minimalist, luxurious, and smart design that looks impressive given the price tag. Standard features include heated and ventilated seats, as well as a cool box conveniently located under the armrest.
The vehicle's exterior features a large premium grille, a floating roof design, and stylish 19-inch alloy wheels, adding to its premium aesthetic. The overall design and look of the Jaecoo 7 are undeniably impressive.
Another noteworthy feature is Jaecoo's generous warranty offer. The vehicle comes with a longer-than-average new car warranty of 7 years or 100,000 miles, matching that of Kia, which adds to its value proposition.
With the Jaecoo 7 only just arriving on UK roads, there isn’t much information yet about its driving performance and handling. However, it appears to be a fantastic family car at a great price, which is likely to attract a wide audience. Its high-end design and premium features make it look more expensive than it is, adding to its appeal.
Like many, it can feel like a gamble to buy a new car brand that hasn’t been widely seen or heard of in the UK, especially since Jaecoo was only founded two years ago. However, based on what we’ve seen so far, the Jaecoo 7 could become quite popular. With its attractive price tag, a generous amount of standard equipment, and the choice of PHEV or petrol variants, it is well-positioned to appeal to many buyers.
It will be interesting to see if the Jaecoo 7 gains traction and becomes a brand more familiar to UK buyers. These things take time, as we’ve seen in the last year or two with other new brands—especially from China—making their way onto UK roads. For instance, BYD, a Chinese brand specialising in all-electric vehicles, has seen a surge in sales over the past year, tripling its numbers from 2023.
While it might take some time for Jaecoo to establish itself, it will be exciting to see how people respond to this new vehicle and whether it becomes a regular sight on UK roads.
